Overview

Wallingford is an historic market town and sits on the River Thames. The town was once an important river crossing and in the 11 th century William the Conqueror deemed a large castle was necessary to protect it. The castle is now ruined with mainly grass covered mounds serving as a reminder of the bitter struggle for supremacy during the Civil War.

The walk takes us across the splendid 900 foot long bridge made up of 16 arches to the other side of the river. Then across a few fields and back over the river via a modern bridge. The walk continues along the Thames path eventually walking through Cholsey Marsh Nature Reserve and then heading into the village of Cholsey.

In the churchyard of St Mary at Cholsey, we can visit the grave of Agatha Christie, a prolific crime writer. The walk then takes us back towards Wallingford alongside the Wallingford and Cholsey single track railway line. As we approach Wallingford, we’ll pass Winterbrook House where Agatha Christie lived at one point during her life.
