Overview

It was early 2020 when we last visited Weymouth and we thought its time to revisit the lovely seaside town. We have also secured a very nice Hotel, the 3 star Hotel Rex which is on the sea front.  Weymouth is a bustling seaside town, with a lovely long, promenade and modern marina with a lively mixture of traditional pubs and modern bistros and plenty of live music to enjoy on a evening. Its also a perfect base to explore some of the most beautiful and dramatic coastal walking in the UK, so this year we shall spend both days on the coast. There is a wealth of walking to be enjoyed including Lulworth Dove, Abbotsbury and the towering limestone cliffs of the Isle of Portland. I cant wait, See you there.

Location & Itinerary

The area is perfect for all levels and ability of walkers, with pleasant gentle strolls, and also some more challenging coastal walking. We will be enjoying some of the most scenic coastal routes in England.  On the Saturday, we will head out to Abbotsbury. This beautiful and ancient village is both historic and picturesque. There is also the idyllic St Catherines Chapel perched high on the summit of a round knoll. Leaving the village behind we will follow ancient tracks up to White Hill. Now with the hard work behind us, a long and lofty ridge extends to Tulks Hill and provides everyone with amazing views along the coast. Soon we leave the ridge behind and begin the descent to West Bexington, where there are a couple of cafes that need to be visited. From here we wander down to the sea and follow the fleet back along the coast to Abbotsbury. Our day will then likely conclude in one of the very inviting country inns in the village….

In contrast, we may explore the dramatic coastline around the Isle of Portland or drive over to Lulworth Cove which is more on the way home for most people. However, I like the Isle of Portland with its huge limestone cliffs tower above the sea, and we can follow trails around the its circumference. At Portland Bill there is the famous light house and also a welcoming café where we can pause. Along the way there’s always a myriad of seabirds to be seen as well as the occasional seal or dolphin. Now on the East coast of the island we will pass Freshwater Bay and wander up to Rufus Castle. The island is well serviced with buses, so at a number of points its possible to curtail the walk and return to Weymouth, thereby enabling a large degree of flexibility for people to head off home on the Sunday

To allow you to choose a walk that suits you best, WalkWise UK will provide a minimum of two walks on each day, led by professional and knowledgeable walking guides. On both days there will be a harder walk of 10-12 miles with up to 2,000ft of ascent and a gentler walk of 7-10 miles with less ascent. The Sunday walk may finish a little earlier.

All walks are weather dependent and own transport may be taken to the walk starts.

Is this for me?

Travel Insurance: It is also recommended that when travelling on holiday or attending Spice weekends away in the UK or overseas that you have adequate travel insurance in case of emergency, cancellation, etc. Travel insurance is an important aspect to booking a weekend or holiday, giving you protection against unforeseen circumstances. We also strongly recommend a personal travel insurance policy that includes COVID-19 cover. While we cannot recommend specific insurance policies as everyone’s requirements are personal to them, Spice have linked up with market leader Staysure Travel Insurance which you may like to take a look at.
