An evening of education exploring the history at this Roman Vineyard, complete with an English wine tasting session and a meal to finish. The perfect way to start any weekend, and also a great addition to anyone booked onto the Shrewsbury Proms & Prosecco Social Weekend

It’s time to visit the ruins of Roman Viriconium Cornoviorum at a fully functioning Roman Vineyard. This family-run winery in the Shropshire countryside has a rich and fantastic history, dating back over 2000 years, and are home to some of England's best quality award winning wines.

Wroxeter Roman Vineyard are fantastic makers of award winning red & white wines, so this experience is perfect for any of us that have ever wondered how the perfect Merlot or Pinot is crafted.

We’ll begin in the vineyard, where we’ll learn all about how seeds are planted, vines are trained and how the grapes are harvested. We'll will then visit the winery where our knowledgeable guide will explain the intricacies of the fermentation and bottling processes.

Then it’s finally time for everyone’s favourite part – the wine-tasting! Here we will have the opportunity to learn about and sample an extensive selection of five different wines. This will be appropriately paired with authentic Italian Cheeses such as Gorgonzola to compliment our experience.

Our tour and tasting session will close with a group Friday night meal, the perfect start for those booked onto the Shrewsbury Proms & Prosecco Social Weekend. If you can't make the full weekend you're still very much welcome to just book this Tour and Tasting session on its own.

In keeping with the Italian theme over the Shrewsbury Proms Weekend, we are delighted to offer you an evening of education exploring the history at this Roman Vineyard and of course the English wines.

What did the Romans ever do for us? In vino veritas! ‘There's truth in wine!’

2000 years ago the Romans decided to come to our lands, Veni, Vidi, Vici! The Romans believed that wine was a daily necessity, as many Italians still do today! Missing their Roman wines so much, they decided to start growing some grapes.

Import duties and transport costs were too expenses so they simply went sustainable, and made and produced wines locally. These wines were available to everyone; slaves, peasants, and aristocrats alike! At the high point in the Roman empire's history, wine experts estimate that a bottle of wine was being consumed each day for every citizen.

Originally stated BC and then re-started in 1991 with a number of Roman, Germanic grape varieties. It’s one of only a few English vineyards where you’ll find Regner Reichensteiner, Madeleine Angevine, Phoenix, Solaris (all white) and Rondo, Regent and Dornfelder (reds).

The names of some of the wines make reference to the nearby ruins – the Roman Villa (Madeleine Angevine) and Noble Roman (Regner) whites, and Roman Red (a Dornfelder/Rondo/Regent blend) – and the labels feature a painting of the imposing wall of the basillica, which still stand 7m tall.
