Overview

Join your fellow Spice members for an exhilarating sailing trip to Weymouth and back on a Nautitech Open 40 catamaran.

Your skipper plans to head out to the West and make the most of the long weekend to get to Weymouth, stopping on the way or way back in the Western Solent, Poole or at anchor in Swanage Bay. As always, the exact itinerary depends on the weather.

You should arrive on Thursday evening, from 6.30 pm, the evening before departure day on board the boat and the skipper will familiarise you with the layout and equipment on board. Once everyone has settled in, plans to suit wind, tides and as far as possible the guest preferences will be made, and also what is needed in the way of supplies.

Do not worry if you are running late, you can join the boat at anytime in the evening or come down early the following morning (just give the skipper a call first to check the plans).

On departure day there will be a safety briefing and then set off. Timings will depend on how far has been travelled and the weather forecast, so breakfast might be on the go, or maybe brunch at anchor later in the morning.

The skipper will get you involved in handling the sails, helming, keeping watch, some navigation and of course the domestics. If there is time, you will stop for lunch on a buoy or at anchor.

By late afternoon/early evening, you will be approaching your overnight stop and getting the boat ready to moor up. In the winter months, that is likely to be including some night sailing. In any event, the skipper will talk you through navigation and entry in to our chosen port whether it is by day or in the dark. Unless you are being self-sufficient by anchoring overnight, there will be walk ashore facilities and restaurants nearby.

Location & Itinerary

Is this for me?

These trips are suitable for novice and experienced sailors, so everyone is welcome. The skipper will be a professional sailing instructor, but you are definitely part of the crew so you will record the miles in your logbook and there is plenty of opportunity to get involved.

Travel & Stay

Accommodation is in one of the four spacious double cabins, the saloon, or there is a small but private crew bunk accessible through a forward hatch.

Getting There

By train

Portsmouth Harbour station from Waterloo.

Come out of the station entrance and turn left. Follow the signs down the ramp to the Gosport ferry (you’ll need to buy a return ticket from the machines at the top of the ramp. It costs a few pounds for a return ticket.

On the Gosport side, bear slight right across the public garden, and go past the Castle Tavern pub on your right.

Turn right into Gosport Marina. Its only about 100m from the ferry. Go straight on, between the block of flats on the left and the marina office on the right and the gate to the marina is ahead of you. Follow someone through the gate, ask at the office or call the skipper and he will walk up to let you in.

By road

From the M27 J11, follow the A27 (to Gosport and Fareham). Keep to the right and at the end of the road, turn left onto the A32 and under the viaduct. Straight over the next roundabout, then fork left (signposted to Gosport).

After about 7 miles, you’ll pass Aldi on your left. Take the 2nd left after that, which has two signs for Premier Gosport.

After 50m turn left again into the main marina car-park. If the barrier is down it means the car park is getting close to being full and you will need to buzz the marina office.

You can park in the marina car park for one hour for free. After that it is chargeable (c.£10) and you pay on exit at one of the two machines. Alternatively there are other car-parks nearby and some free on-street parking.

The marina gate is to the left of the Café. Follow someone through the gate or call the skipper and he will walk up to let you in.

How to get to the boat

From the car park gate, walk down on to the pontoons and turn right. There is another gate 50m ahead with a button on the right to release the lock. Go through and turn left on to pier D.

From the marina office gate, walk down on to the pontoons and turn left. Take the next right on to pier D, just before the gate.

Walk to the end of pier D and over the little bridge to the breakwater. Turn left again and walk along the breakwater to the last boat on the left.
