Edge Hill and Hornton Moderate to Hard Level Walk
Overview
This is a stunning 10 mile round trip with a total of 200m of ascent spread throughout the day.
The walk is expected to take about 4 hours.
We head out from Hornton along an ancient track climbing to open farmlands with views to the far distance. This then joins the Macmillan way for a while passing Shennington Airfield and on to the south end of Edge Hill. We then follow this natural escarpment to the village of Edge Hill then leave it to descend into the lovely village of Ratley where we will take a break in the local pub.
From here we then head on to the village of Warmington before cutting back to Hornton. The going can be muddy, but this is a good time of year to see Edge Hill as much of the leaf cover will have gone and the views are far more open. It can of course be very windy and wet so come prepared.
There is a pub in Hornton where we can recover at the end if the necessary.
There is one set of fields that are usually full of cows, so dogs are not welcome on this walk.
National Trust members may like to visit nearby Upton House after the walk.
Note: there are no toilet facilities at the start in the village that will be open.
Leave M40 at junction 12 and head west into Gaydon Village. Turn left at roundabout on B4100 signed for Banbury, you will pass a petrol station/ village shop on your left. Drive past the village of Warmington and then after a couple of miles take right turn to village of Horley, stay on the main road through the village and then after a couple of miles take the left turn down the hill into the village of Hornton.
Car park is free, but be considerate to locals.
