Tutbury Castle & Fauld Crater Ramble
Overview
This lovely and little visited countryside area holds many historical secrets. We start off in Tutbuy with its impressive Castle but by following the River Dove out of town we come across a lesser known but equally impressive sight:
Fauld Crater is a huge scar in the landscape, caused by Britain's largest man made explosion. On 27 November 1944, 4,000 tons of high explosive bombs stored in former Gypsum mines exploded leaving 70 people dead (18 never to be found) and a crater 400 feet deep, and around half a mile long. A simple plaque tells its story but Richard will give much more detail on the day.
From Fauld we continue to Hanbury and Draycott in the Clay before completing a circuit to the south that takes us back to Tutbury and a well earned drink at one of its equally historic hostelries!
The full route is around 10 miles but is fairly flat throughout and there are short cuts we can make if conditions are bad plus many opportunities to stop along the way.
