Wrekin Hard Walk
Overview
The route. Many people see the Wrekin from the M54 as they head off to the wet hills of North Wales and dismiss it as it stands alone, yet it offers exceptional views from the top and is a fine days outing.
This circular walk is about 9 miles with about 550m of ascent and is demanding so not suitable for beginners or the unfit.
It is timed to hopefully hit the bluebell flowering.
Leaving the village we will skirt the flanks of the Wrekin before grinding our way up the vertiginous path to gain the summit via Heaven’s Gate. Some time will be spent enjoying the view, possibly hoping to see the odd seagull flying backwards, whilst we recover and consume lunch.
We will the descend via Hell’s gate and wind our way through various woodlands before passing through the tiny hamlet of Steeraway before returning to the Huntsman for well deserved refreshments.
We should return by about 3.30pm
